In this class we will read texts that allow us to follow the history and theory of citizenship and deportation laws and practices from the American colonies of England through contemporary policies and debates, including those of the 2016 Presidential election. The class will read original texts and histories about deportation policies, and compare these with our country's current laws, practices, theories, and debates. This course will require students to attend at least four hours of immigration court hearings in downtown Chicago on at least two occasions. Hearings begin at 8:30 a.m.. and students need to be there promptly. (The court is easily accessible by public transportation.)
